Working with Readmitted Students

FOR ADVISORS:

Advising and Encouraging Readmitted Students!

Readmitted students have already invested a lot of time and money into completing their degree! As a University, we’ve spent money recruiting them to UNC Charlotte as freshman or transfer students. We currently have two categories we process as readmit students:

  • All readmit students are former degree-seeking undergraduate students of UNC Charlotte that have stopped out for a year or longer. Students that have never attended UNC Charlotte previously, will be processed as a new transfer student through admissions.
  • The 49er Finish students are UNC Charlotte students with 90 hours or more that left in good academic and financial standing. These students are recruited by the OASES office to return to the university to complete their degree. We work closely with the student on the readmission process and offer information on transitioning back into the university. We also partner with major departments to offer specialized advising to answer the particular questions about general education and major requirements.

Former students begin the readmission process by completing the readmit online application form, paying the application fee (this fee is waived for 49er Finish Students), and submitting any official transcripts needed for review (if they attended another college since leaving UNC Charlotte).

Considerations in Advising:

  • Readiness/Expectations of enrolling in classes
    • Working full-time, out of state
    • Class format needed (day, evening, hybrid or online)
    • Time/Financial committment
    • Adult Student orientation (if out for more than 2 years)
  • Appealing Forgiveness/2 Year Rule
    • Low GPA – if below 2.0, they may not be able to appeal
    • Appealing for timely graduation – academic petition
    • GPA for future – Graduate School
  • General Education/Major Requirements
    • Graduation audit concerns
    • DegreeWorks vs. manual graduation audits
    • Course changes for Degree Programs
    • Senior residency requirement (last 30 hours)
    • Transfer Credit options/limitations
    • Academic petitions for timely graduation
  • Financial Aid/Scholarships
    • FAFSA
    • Readmission to the university may not mean financial aid eligibility
    • OASES and University scholarships

FOR STAKEHOLDERS:

Ways to expand services for readmitted students

  • Develop a protocol for advising readmit students within the departments.
  • Establish routine exceptions the department will approve.
  • Determine a list of older curriculum that can be substituted for new courses.
  • Train advisors on new “rules” that may hinder graduation (repeated attempts and time limitations on courses).
  • Design a webpage for readmitted students that explains any particular advising processes.
  • Monitor denials for graduation each semester.
  • Develop an outreach plan for when students are unresponsive, especially for those that are senior status.
  • Advise students on the readmission process and try to alleviate miscommunication about readmission.
