Kathi and Don Baucom Scholarship
During her 36-year career at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Kathi Baucom worked passionately to help students plan for and attain their educational goals. Her husband, Don, was always by her side, providing a listening ear, wise counsel and loving support. By creating the Kathi and Don Baucom Scholarship, Kathi wishes to support and encourage adult learners pursuing an undergraduate degree and honor her late husband.
Kathi began her career as an admissions counselor and was ultimately named Director of Admissions, a position she held for 14 years. In 1998, Kathi was appointed as Associate Provost for Enrollment Management and oversaw a division including Undergraduate Admissions, Student Financial Aid, Registration and Records, Adult Students and Evening (now, Extended) Services (OASES), University Call Center, Residency Determination, and Disability Services. Among her various responsibilities, Kathi developed University enrollment goals, established the University’s first call center, created a centralized residency review office, and played a central role in implementing the nationally competitive Levine Scholars Program for entering first-year students. One of her fondest accomplishments was creating the framework for the 49er Finish Program, an award-winning outreach and recruitment program for adult learners.
In 2011, Kathi was recognized for her significant contributions to the University’s educational mission by being awarded the title of “Honorary Alumna” by the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association. During that same year, she received the Apex Award for Student Success, a national award recognizing her work toward enhancing the administration and delivery of student services. Kathi holds a Masters in Education in Student Personnel and Counseling and a B.A. in psychology from the University of Georgia. Her son, David Chadwick (Chad) Baucom, is a proud graduate of UNC Charlotte.
