Virginia Bufkin Scholarship

Virgina (Ginny) Duckworth Bufkin was a true supporter for nontraditional students as she was one herself! She loved people, and she enjoyed the opportunity to serve her business clients with the skills she learned at UNC Charlotte. She was very proud of her accomplishments at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration in 1971. Ginny was the owner of Bufkin & Company, a tax and accounting service for individuals and businesses. She was extremely successful in her accomplishments of 20 years in public accounting and five years in banking where she assisted clients with making numerous important corporate and personal financial decisions.

Ginny received numerous honors and awards during her career. She was selected as an honorary member of Alpha Sigma Lambda Gamma Rho Chapter at UNC Charlotte. Further she was selected for the prestigious membership of the Tax Forum Committee for North Carolina. In addition to notable honors and awards, Ginny was an influential and a well-respected business leader in North Carolina and the Charlotte area. She was president of the NC Chapter of the National Association of Tax Practitioners. In addition, she served as treasurer of the Institute of Management Accounts, the treasurer of the South Park Chapter of American Business Woman’s Association, and the secretary and treasurer of the Friends of UNC Charlotte.

Not only was Ginny involved with numerous business associations and with UNC Charlotte, she was an aficionado of Scottish Terriers and was involved with raising and showing Scotties. Over the years she had numerous “Scottie Children.” Although she was extremely proud of all of her special pets, she was well known in the world of Scottie breeders for her champion boy Dominator. She said of him that he was “regal and a true winner in life. He was a fighter, a competitor, and a sweetheart.” Dominator crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2008. Ginny was actively involved in the Scottish Terrier Rescue Programs of the Carolinas where she enjoyed adopting many dogs who needed love and a special home that only she could provide. Ginny enjoyed participating in national competitive shows for Scotties. She enjoyed collecting Scottie memorabilia and entertaining all those who also loved Scotties as much as she did. She hosted two Scottie Fests at her home for Scottie enthusiasts.

Ginny Bufkin’s legacy will be one of generosity to UNC Charlotte and her love for her friends, both human and canine. She will long be remembered as she made a difference in many lives through her friendships and financial assistance. The words Ginny used to describe her beloved Dominator can be descriptive of her as well; she was regal, a true winner in life, a fighter, a competitor, and sweetheart. We remember and celebrate Ginny today for the special legacies she leaves for us!

Along with her corporate commitments to help others, Ginny was instrumental in setting up several scholarships on the UNC Charlotte campus. In addition to the Virginia D. Bufkin Scholarship which was established in the Office of Adult Students and Extended Services in 1999, she set up the Friends Scholarship Program in OASES and an additional scholarship in the Disability Services office on the UNC Charlotte campus the same year. Her contributions have made a huge difference in the lives of many students who would not have had the opportunity to attend the university without the financial support provided by generous donors such as Ginny and the Friends of UNC Charlotte. Ginny passed on April 27, 2012.
